About Gombe Stream National Park

Gombe Stream National Park, which covers an area of about 35 square kilometers, is one of Africa’s truly wild destinations. Dr. Jane Goodall visited the park and performed the longest primatological study in 1960. The main purpose was to learn and conduct research on chimp behavior in comparison to human behavior. She is regarded as the world’s foremost expert on chimps, and her findings are thought to be the most extensive. Records show that Dr. Jane was able to carefully monitor Chimpazees and research their characteristics that are similar to those of humans due to her expertise.

Gombe lies north of Kigoma on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, the world’s second deepest lake. The park’s landscape is stunning, with deep tropical rainforest and dense woodland. Located on the Great Rift Valley Escarpment, Gombe Stream is breathtaking and well worth a visit. There are splendid views of the rift escarpment mountains falling westwards into the lake, providing tourists with an incredible landscape view.

Getting to Gombe Stream National Park is more difficult than in other parks, but it is a spectacular way to explore Tanzania’s landscape. Gombe is accessible by scheduled aircraft from Dar es Salaam or Arusha. You may catch a slow or fast train from Dar es Salaam to Kigoma, or you can take a ferry along the shore of Lake Tanganyika. Gombe Wildlife & Birds

Best time to visit

Chimpanzees trekking in Gombe Stream National Park can be done throughout the year, but they are easily spotted during the dry season, from Mid-June to October. This is when the chimps tend to stick to the lower slopes of the park.
